I'm not a DFL insider, rather a supporter. I recall that Olin Moore, Rep
Sabo's Staff Chief in Minnesota, had the endorsement going into the special
election. I also remember that this became an issue as an outgrowth of the
special election because the people electing Councilman Samuels actually
weren't technically being represented by him. And vice versa. I believe
that Rep. Kahn lives in the "in-between" area where other people were voting
for her councilmember.

Going in, Councilman Samuels was a total upstart. I really don't see the
grand conspiracy. Don't get me wrong, Greens and the GOP are both parties
in competition with the DFL, so the Greens shouldn't expect to be treated
with kid gloves. But there is no secret plan to eliminate them. Just an
overt plan to form broader and more effective coalitions to beat them in
legal elections.

Subject: [Mpls] why are early elections anti-green?

Immediately after any election, political junkies
start speculating on who may could be running in
next election. When Natalie won, surely there were
DFLers starting to talk about who to run against
her in 4 years. If I have it correctly, the new
ward lines were completed in April 2002.

I am asking this as an honest question, and not in
any way as any type of accusation. Is it at all
possible that DFL insiders in April 2002 could have
speculated that Samuels might be a good DFL
contender against Johnson Lee in the next election?

Harrison (at the SW corner of ward 5)

that the two Greens were redistricted into new
wards with DFL incumbents. At the time of
redistricting, Natalie Johnson Lee was in a redrawn
ward with no other incumbent. In the time SINCE
redistricting, the council member from the Third
Ward was forced to resign and the voters of the
ward elected a new councilmember, Don Samuels, who
lives within the boundaries of the newly drawn Fifth
Ward. There were no shenanigans involved with that
situation.
