It's as regular as Minnesota mosquitoes — community newspaper editors getting calls from both sides insisting that lawn signs are being trashed.. by only one side.

I can tell you that short of personal injury being inflicted, there's no story here. Honestly, ever year, the charges fly from all sides, in about equal measure.

As for their purpose: Connie is right, they can be to increase name recognition of political unknowns. However — though I doubt anyone would admit this — many voters "follow the leader" and are subtly influenced by a profusion of them.

Also, signs have the potential to enthuse the base (if they see them all about) and it's important to maintain enthusiasm during a campaign.
