I don't think there is very much quantifiable data regarding what causes people to vote the way they do. However, I have never met a campaign manager that didn't believe that lawn signs weren't an intergal part of running a campaign. I had the pleasant opportunity of setting several hundred My guess as to why that is - name recognition as it relates to undecided voters.
