KC:
The abortion question is a high court issue that will
never be decided at the local level. Baker is not
going to violate the canon of ethics and campaign on
an issue so he is powerless to refute the unfounded
suggestion he is anti-choice.

EY: He could publically ask MCCL to cease and desist
if they are calling on his behalf.

Just as a reality check - District Court judges do make infrequent rulings related to abortion, but they are serious and the public should know if a particular candidate is predisposed one way or another.

The clearest influence District Court judges have on this isse is in permitting minors to obtain abortions without parental consent for good cause (think rape, incest, abuse, absent parent, etc.). Anti-choice judges are in the habit of routinely denying these requests, which is a big deal, at least to me.

Also, with the current complexion of our legislature, it is likely that more controversial laws will be passed on the issue of reproductive rights, and that a court challenge under the 'Women's Right to Know' Act is imminent. District judges make these initial rulings.

And lastly, where do you think higher court judges come from? Unfortunately or not, idealogues of any stripe are more likely than neutral judges to be apopinted to appelate courts by ideologue politicians. We shoul be vigilant of this kind of thing and not pretend it is inconsequential.
