Not Signing a Signature Block

The City of Minneapolis is once again marshaling its considerable resources in terms
of time and development talent to attract a proposal to the Nicollet Hotel block north
terminal site on the northern edge of downtown Minneapolis. Community planning and
economic development staff held a pre-proposal conference to introduce staff to the
many players that developers will need to work with to make this complex project a
reality. Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak and Seventh Ward Council Member Lisa Goodman
were both on hand to share their enthusiasm for what they believe is an important
keystone development project worthy of signature architecture. Unfortunately, to date
the word on the street is that the usual developer suspects - and even some unusual
ones - are deterred by the notion that a transit hub must be integrated into the
project. We believe that developers who still have even an inkling of interest should
make contact directly with the MCTCO's new director, Brian Lamb (frequently touted in
this rag). Lamb's unique background and experience demonstrate that he is able to work
toward a number of creative solutions. We hope at least one developer will rise to the
occasion. It would be a shame to see this important block end up as a mirrored bus
garage.
