i am replying to the many inquiries posted .i am one of those microenteprisers myself albeit i am able to communicate well myself.I would like everyone to know first that i do believe in progress . Mr.Tamali seems to want feedback from us actual tenants on lake street and he is to be commended on that.As to the neighbor that wanted to move in you are absolutely right ,the fear is that even though the businesses might open the failure is highly likely. The immigrant population applies there business concepts just as much as ther living conditions.FAMILIARITY bottom line if the neighbors in the same mall can speak your language and you are familiar with them from your own community one is most likely to have a business in the same location. at All the minimalls one sees a store owner bring there child or family member to visit while they work and the neighbors do the same thing,or a store owner selling their neighbors items while the person runs an errand.you see the somali shop owners praying at a certain time as they have a little prayer chapel, all kinds of accomodations need to be factored in,the prominent display of religious symbols etc.
.Obviously a time will come when those minor things will no longer have a place in those immigrants lives but right now maybe its a little too soon.I dont disagree with the whole sears cocept maybe they need to include retailers that might generally not come to that neighborhood and would also be an anchor store,i just dont think the time for a global village is here and i dont know of a lot of ethnic stores that can franchise a second location except for holyland which is obviously a large scale business.I have conducted a survey of our members and those are there concerns too.If anyone is interested i could give you that information.shukri adan Whittier Neighborhood.
