I thought the list might enjoy this commentary by local artist Patrick Scully published recently in the Strib. Does this mean that I can start "gorilla marketing" my favorite businesses, my art, or my opinions? (I'm thinking about "tagging" recycling logos all over Mpls now that I've read this - maybe more people will separate their glass from their plastics?)

Patrick Scully: City needs more beauty, not more ads in public spaces

When I noticed Walker Art Center and the Guthrie Theater both using graffiti tactics to advertise their summer programs, I started wondering about public space. Who gets to use it, and for what?

Walker had sidewalks stenciled with ads for mini golf in the Sculpture Garden. The Guthrie had "Death of a Salesman" ads chalked onto sidewalks all over town. This caused me to wonder: When the high art houses resort to tagging, are we all free to do so?
