I noted in Don Greely's quiz on bicycles that state law requires cyclists
give an audible warning before passing pedestrians. I am a frequent walker,
and often enjoy walking the Trail between Minnehaha Falls and Fort Snelling
State Park. Less than 20% of bicyclists give audible warnings before
passing from the rear. I can't tell you how many times I've been startled
by bikes blazing past me from behind, frequently at high speed. I walk for
the physical and contemplative experience. I enjoy occasionally letting go
and sinking into the beauty, history and essence of the river gorge and of
life itself. As such, I on occasion "tune out." Perhaps I am guilty of
walking under the influence of meditation. I appreciate it when bicyclists
announce their approach and always reply with a thank you to them as they
pass. I am surprised that I have not heard of bicycle pedestrian collisions,
as I have experienced a number of close calls myself. Perhaps they just
don't merit notice or reporting. If bicyclist fear automobiles passing
them, they should also be able to appreciate the pedestrian's situation.
I'd appreciate it, if some of the bikers on the list insisting on better
accomodations for their mode of high speed transport, would consider their
responsibilites to others as well. I've heard occasional lip service, but
would like to see the bike caucus come up with some actual action to
effectively educate and regulate its own. While I'm at it, I've also been
distressed over the years with the mountain bikers turning every deer and or
rabit trail along the river gorge into a veritable mountain bike super
highway. There are places where bikes just should be off limits.
