As one of your Gay friends who is also a Green Party member I can tell you
that the first thing you can do to fight right wing reaction is to stop
supporting the Democratic Party. If you advocate for the Democrats as the
lesser evil you have as good as told them that you are going to keep voting for
them no matter how bad they get. As I wrote to Paul Wellstone when he
announced his support for the so-called Defense Of Marriage Act, there must be
some limit on how evil we can allow the lesser evil to become before we
withdraw our support or there will be no limit on how evil they can become.
When they become more evil on the grounds that we "do not have anyplace else to
go" since many people have already told them that they are going to support
them as the lesser evil no matter what, then we must go there anyway and vote
third party. As the Democrats have moved further to the right, the Republicana
have had room to move further to the right which has given the Democrats
room to move further to the right which...
Do you know which President said a woman ought not to be denied access to
family planning because of her economic circumstances? It was NIXON!!! This
ought to tell you how far to the right the political climate has moved to the
right in this country over the last thirty years.
Supporting the lesser evil is analogous to being on a run away out of
control train whose crew have abandoned the train. The train is rushing down
the tracks towards a raging fores fire. The heat may be a little less
oppressive and the air easier to breath if you crowd into the back of the
caboose, the Democratic Party, than if you stay in the front car, the
Republican Party. The caboose will always be a little more bearable than the
front car. But your ultimate destination is the same! In the middle of the
inferno! You had better think out of the box and, if you can't jump out of the
train like movie stuntmen, tie layers of seat cushions around yourself to break
the impact and jump!
I don't think I have to move to Canada just yet although I have thougt since
911 that I may be like a Jew living in Germany in 1932 after Hitler won the
election. Moving to Canada would probably only be a temporary solution anyway
since an imperial U.S. would eventually occupy Canada anyway. (Just think of
all the Roman sounding names we will be able to name our northern provinces --
Britannium Columbium, Ontarium. etc!) There is still a chance the left can win
in this country if we learn how to fight which means we have to stop supporting
the Democratic Party as the lesser evil. Bush has gotten the country into a
situation where it can't even digest Iraq, let alone Syria, Lebanon, Iran,
Sudan, etc. And just imagine the Antiwar Movement even a Vietnam like quagmire
in Iraq will provoke! Not to mention the multi trillions dollar deficit Bush is
accumulating.
