Q. What terrible traffic problem did this solve?
A. To keep traffic moving through the intersection it is necessary to keep
the right turn only lane reserved for people that are turning right onto
32nd and not those people lining up illegally in that lane to exit on Lake
St.

If the bumpout weren't there, people would line up in the right turn only
lane preventing people from turning right. Then they would drive through
the intersection and interfear with people in the legal lane from making
an easy turn only Lake. This will cause people in the legal lane to hit
their breaks and slow down people who want to continue on Hiawatha and not
exit on Lake.

But I have lived in Longfellow for years and use this intersection very often. I have never once experienced what you are talking about. What I do see happening now is much more congestion on both 32nd St., since it is now harder to turn right, and Hiawatha since those turning are now always forced to merge into the two lanes. Before I saw it as an excellent way of preventing accidents and allowing for the easy flow of traffic. Why fix it when it ain't broke!?!
