Eric Mitchell wrote me back and stated he was over his limit for the day so I will include it way down below. I am actually responding to one of his last paragraphs which says:
..."Care to lay out your involvement in the Fifth Ward beyond being city-wide Park Board rep?"
So here goes....Well, Eric,
My first work was with a Citizens group that worked to Stop the Downtown Incinerator (HERC) being built being concerned at that time about the air pollution that might spew from on to the Northside. Obviously we didn't stop it being built and it is still a big question as to how much "crap" it spreads over the northside.
From there when I worked in the food co-ops and at the warehouse we picked up our oats at Fruen's Mill.
And one of my favorite places in the park system is the little creek that runs off to the south of the Mills.
And I used to get water up at the pumps by Eloise Butler Gardens until they began to dry up when Prudential Life Insurance used the water for their HVAC systems.
I can move in to the mid-80's when I served as the Community Organizer and ED of Harrison Neighborhood Association with our little office at Glenwood and Morgan Aves.
I also staffed the Glenwood Avenue Business Association while there. This work also put me in contact with other Northside Neighborhood Organizations aand the Bryn Mawr Neighborhood Association because there were several joint projects we tried to pull off along Basssett's Creek and cleaning up the railroad corridor. (I first met Jackie Cherryhomes when she was the Housing Development person at NNRC)
Part of my project work there (at HNA) included the many youth mural projects along Glenwood Avenue including the Historic and award winning mural on the west side of the old Milda's Cafe on Morgan Ave. (Milda and I even took some of the kids went to the Capitol one day when Governor Perpich even honored our work and gave us an award fo some sort).
During that time I worked on activities with the old Queen Nursing Home, the MarBee Senior Center and the Lao Assistance Center. Helping plan Juneteenth way back then and other Northside community activities. I also was part of a group who did some of the strategic planning for the first ideas generated "down in the Valley" that now are part of the Bassett's Creek Master Plan.
From this I developed relationships with both Pillsbury United on Fremont Ave. and the Oak Park Center.
Since 1990 I have met hundreds of north and northeast residents as planning activities and events have occurred with the Minneapolis Park Board including Heritage Park development, North Commons Water Park just to name a couple.
A couple or years back I did some consulting work at Northside Resident's Redevelopment Council helping with Block Club organizing culminated by a massive National Night Out effort.
My most recent northside activities are associated with the Environmental Justice Advocates of Minnesota which meets at the Urban League. I serve as Vice-chair while Rep. Keith Ellison is chair. We cut our teeth on concerns about possible pollution at Heritage Park and the Public Hearing held to address the need for changes to natural gas because of emissions and changes with Excel on the coal plants and the health hazards and conditions facing the residents of the 'hood where members of the State PUC attended. Upcoming in January will be our 2nd Annual Founder's Day Celebration addressing Environmental Justice issues in both the northside and the Phillips community.

I am sure there are more stories, people and activities I have been part of on the northside since living in Minneapolis but hopefully this alleviates some of your concerns as to my connections to the northside of Minneapolis. And in addition one last parting note - I happen to believe some of the most beautiful places to witness the skyline of downtown occurs on the northside from the Bryn Mawr Fields and driving into downtown on Olson Highway. And seeing a deer or two out on the back forty of Wirth Park is a divine treat indeed.
For tonight,

I can't respond to the board as I have written twice.

1. My explanation was more to the general audience and
I would have included Natalie and Neva Walker as two
who could have won without Party endorsement.
I know this because I worked on behalf of Neva the
first time she ran, and I worked against Natalie.

2. Nice kick to label me a St Paulite- sure its where
I live now. Previously I lived longer in the Fifth
Ward of Mpls than anywhere else in this state. I
worked with our Councilmember at the time
(Cherryhomes) and worked on her behalf in the race. I
was a delegate to the last Citywide endorsing
convention as well.

While living in the Fifth Ward, I also sat on the DFL
city convention rules committee, Mpls Civil Rights
Commission, the Mpls Complete Count Commission(
mission was to get as many people involved in the
Census as possible in our city to ensure as complete
count as possible- so that when we redraw lines, we
are somewhat accurate), Downtown Neighborhood Council
and had my fingers in other things up until late 2002.

Care to lay out your involvment in the Fifth Ward
beyond being city-wide Park Board rep?

Maybe I'll send this to the Board tomorrow. I wouldn't
want people to get the idea that I'm sticking my nose
in from across the river with no basis.
