This is also the hearing in which the cuts to our POLICE cuts will be discussed. Joan Thom Hawthorne ----- Original Message ----- From: Victoria Heller To: Mpls Forum Sent: Monday, December 06, 2004 7:51 AM Subject: [Mpls] Tonight's the night! Room 317, City Hall, 5:05 p.m.
Come and get your free Pie Chart! It's the annual Truth in Taxation hearing. Let's see if the Mayor and Council Members have the nerve to show up. In 2002, C. M. Zerby was absent. I was told that he was in Cuba and have been wondering ever since if Mpls taxpayers paid for the trip. Mayor Rybak popped in and out, preferring that the staff bookkeepers answer questions. The other Council Members would frequently arise from their thrones and slip into a back room, I presume for snacks since no one goes to the bathroom that often. So come on down and have a hoot tonight. Maybe we'll find out why the City's water bills net more cash than property taxes. [Note: A duplex in Minneapolis pays higher water bills than a 21 unit apartment building in St. Paul.] Maybe we'll find out why so many downtown landmarks have dropped 50% or more in taxable value; Midwest Plaza, Marshall Fields, City Center, Whitney Hotel, etc. Maybe we'll find out how the tax assessor determines taxable values. We know that it has nothing to do with the price paid for property. We know that it has nothing to do with the location of property (since side by side, identical buildings are vastly different). Maybe the secret formula will be revealed. I certainly hope that the formula, whatever it turns out to be, is applied equally to Democrats and Republicans, friends and foes. I can't guarantee that you'll have a good time, but you will learn something. Stop by and say hello. I'll be wearing my pastel turquoise cowboy boots, just in case I need to kick some tubb.
