The park is open 6 am to 10 pm and all the fields are lighted so play in Spring/Summer and Fall can go to 10 pm. per MPRB website minneapolisparks.org
Making the assumption that the Spring Leagues start around April 15th and Fall Leagues end around Oct 15th (I see them playing as I drive home from work past the fields at St. Anthony Parkway and Marshall ST NE) that is 24 weeks the fields are open.
The following is a low ball estimate of how many games could be played assuming 24 weeks, 13 fields, AM play on weekends only and games around 3 hours apiece.
24 weeks x 5 evenings x1 game x 13 fields =1560 games
24 weeks x 1 saturday x 5 games x 13 fields =1560 games
24 weeks x1 sunday x 4 games x 13 fields = 1248 games
This gives us a low ball estimate that at convenient times the fields could handle 4368 games. Mr. Neiman provided us with the totals for 2004 at Youth 718 games and Adults at 731 games for a total of 1449 games. For those of you who don't remember the infamous percentage equation 1449 games = ?% of 4368 games
1449/4368=.33 x100= 33%
I imagine that practice time is used as well and wouldn't be accounted for in the tallies, but as you may have noticed I didn't include weekdays or weekday afternoons in my estimate. I also over estimated in my opinion the length of the most games and didn't include holiday weekend tournaments that from my experience being 1 of 5 kids that participated in youth sports in my family seemed to be a GIANT complaint of my mother.
Even if we drop Sunday play from the equation we end up with 46 %. The MPRB needs to get those numbers way up to make these fields self sustaining.
Statistics, can't live with them, can manipulate them to prove any point.
