And a lot of them aren't even stopping in South Dakota- look at the continuing migration to Montana, a state whose income tax rate tops out at around 11%!
In fact, I would guess that many of them are millionaires.
A million will build you a small mansion on a decent sized spread in South Dakota. However, the commuting expense to the Twins/Vikes/Timberwolves games will pretty much negate any tax savings (Escalades ain't cheap to run).
Yesterday's USA today published a very telling article about the growing "red" states and the shrinking "blue" states. Check it out.
Growing as in bulging bellies... that population increase is largely due to higher birth rates among "reds". The real truth is that other than a few millionaires building their country estates along that jobs project they call Interstate 29 and desperate for work immigrants, not much of anyone is moving to South Dakota. BTW, the millionaires are more noticeable because a luxury SUV does sort of stick out on the dirt roads. Note also that a lot of the population increase in the Dakotahs is on the Indian nation's lands, as increasing economic opportunities allow tribal members to move home from the big cities.
