Congratulations to Vicky Heller and Cedar Riverside Associates on being awarded the MN-AIA 25 Year Award for The Cedar Square West development near Cedar-Riverside in Mpls. I was a undergrad student at the U of M when that parcel of land was assembled, and I know it was no easy task. It's interesting to note that it was a privately financed deal as well. I'd guess that Cedar Square West represents the highest density residential development in the Twin Cities area, and very likely in a much larger geographic area. [Vicky, you mention that the original project was planned to include 13,000 residential units-- how many units are in the development today?] It's continued low-vacancy rate over the years is testament to the validity of the architect's and the developer's initial vision over thirty years ago.
Side bar-- I recently visited a nice new establishment in the Cedar Square West area-- the Baja Grill and Restaurant (or something very similar), located two blocks west of Cedar on 6th St... and just 50 yards from the light rail stop. New owners are gambling their own money that the place will be a hit. Currently they don't open until 4 p.m., but I'd guess it could become a great lunch spot given it's proximity to downtown and easy access by light rail. I encourage folks to stop in for a beer after work to check the place out, and be sure to try the tortilla soup! And, if you work downtown, encourage the owners to think about offering lunch in the near future. They also have a very large -free- parking lot adjacent to the building! Easy access by light rail, auto or bus-- how's that for location, location, location?
