I wondered about this idea and I don't think it would work so well for
Minneapolis high school students to attend their broadcasting classes at
Brown College. Namely because the radio broadcasting program for Brown
College is located in Mendota Heights. It would be pretty hard for most, if
not all, inner-city high school kids to get themselves over there for it,
especially if they were only there part time and had to come back to school
for their other coursework. I checked an online map program and it's about
30 minutes one-way from Minneapolis North to Brown College.

I remember back when I went to Minneapolis North, I had friends in the
post-secondary options programs at the U of MN. Most of the ones I knew who
were in it were kids who already lived somewhat near campus, either in
Northeast or Southeast Minneapolis.

I also checked out the KBEM web site - http://www.jazz88fm.com/ - and
learned that not only is Minneapolis North already has an academic
internship program for KBEM students with Brown College as well as Metro
State University and the University of Minnesota.

Perhaps what needs to happen is folks who like to criticize our city school
programs as being wasteful or redundant should go learn the facts before
suggesting that our schools try things that they're already doing. It took
me about two minutes on an internet search to find out what programs KBEM
already has in place and I didn't even have to google myself. :-)

By the way, folks who want to pledge to KBEM can do so online at

There's still about eight hours to go if you want to write it off on your
tax return for this year.
