I haven't looked into PRT in years, but the consensus of city planning and transportation folks whom I know considered it a potential eyesore with promising control technology. I guess I still have to agree, even though I had the PRT fever for a while and perhaps still do. My main problem with it is that it does not offer the same security as private vehicles (people must get to the station safely). I like AJ's plan too, though, and the hybrid taxi notion suggests some modifications to Ed Anderson's PRT that would address the private vehicle security problem. Why not have privately owned or leased hybrid PRT vehicles that could operate on city streets as well as enter PRT lines and operate automatically as PRT vehicles? And while I'm still in fantasy/brainstorming mode, Why not double deck all of our metro highways, arteries, and freeways to provide more space for development of all kinds and save money on winter snow plowing? Think of all the new metro cross country ski and bicycle trails possible. And Anderson could stick his PRT up there too. Dean's $600 million would have to be increased by several billion dollars, but I think the idea has great potential.
