David Shove writes:

"I am for giant slingshots. You the traveller step into the pocket, both
are drawn back back back, aimed in the general direction of the
destination, and FWUPP!! you're on your way! You fly out of downtown Mpls
in no time at all, far over those poor slobs on 35W. You laugh your most
carefree laugh as you speed over south Mpls! Soon you'll be back home in
Apple Valley!

"If this mode becomes popular, there might be occasional instances of
travellers encountering each other at high speed in mid-air. So it's not
perfect. But aside from this problem (which, you note, I candidly raise in
the spirit of open discussion), it neatly solves at one and the same time
the problems of transportation and of overpopulation."

Bill Kahn responds:

I don't think this slingshot notion is necessarily dangerous or
unreasonable, but like PRT, it needs refining and demonstration. Personally, I
would
have chosen an air cannon, but aside from the absence of parachutes, protective
gear, and FAA air traffic control issues; it is a completely workable mode of
transportation for a segment of our population.
