If JFK or Paul Wellstone were to be resurrected and take on the job of reforming the MPS they'd also be seen as being brash and pushy. Doing what needs to be done is going to alienate a lot of people. There are two general classes of managers: task oriented and people oriented. You cannot come into an organization that needs to be reorganized and be people oriented; employees will always find something objectionable about a reformer. Carol Johnson was a people oriented manager who did little or nothing for the children in the MPS. She did however, keep the unions and the DFL happy and our Black citizens quiet. Notice that the DFL's new endorsee is already snapping at Ms. Peebles' ankles.
What's really interesting to me is that this is the second, and almost identical, article about Ms. Peebles. I think that the first ran in the Metro section and the current one on the Front Page. It's my guess that the first article didn't have the desired effect, i.e., it didn't keep Ms. Peebles in line. Good for her. Maybe she'll actually be able to accomplish something and not waste her time here. If she does, she'll be able to find an even better position in a more hospitable locale. I'll give her the same unsolicited advice as I will to the Mayor: If you're not willing to turn your back and walk away, you'll never have the strength necessary to make major improvements. They'll keep you in line with the salary, the perks, and the prestige. Mind your ego. Michael Atherton Prospect Park REMINDERS: 1. Think a member has violated the rules?
