I should clarify one item in Fred's helpful introduction...

This applies specifically to DFL caucuses, but I believe that the Green Party also uses this process, so if there are Green caucuses, this might also apply to those.

If there are more people who want to be delegates than there are delegate spots in a particular precinct, it is possible that the caucus will use either the Walking Subcaucus or the Written Subcaucus procedure to ensure proportional representation. This means that not every attendee will be voting on each delegate spot, because smaller groups can subcaucus in order to get a proportional number of delegate spots. This process is intended to prevent a majority from excluding a united minority. If anyone is interested in learning how this process works, you can find an explanation at the following URL:

This is actually a standard procedure used in DFL delegate selection processes. It is used if enough people request it--the requirement is that the number of people requesting proportional representation be sufficient to elect at least one delegate (i.e., if a caucus can elect 10 delegates, 1/10th of the caucus can ask for proportional representation).

If people are confused about this process, or are interested in understanding how it affects delegate elections, please feel free to contact me either on or off this list.
