"But what a steal at $6800/foot to move the Shubert two blocks

Back in 1999 the city of Minneapolis moved the Shubert Theatre a few hundred
feet from its original location to make room for the Block E development. At
a cost of $4.7 million it ranks as the costliest building move in history.
Five years later the rotting hulk of the Shubert is still there. The $34
million renovation of the Shubert was supposed to be completed by now, but
the opening date has been pushed back to 2006 or 2007 - contingent on $10
million in bonding the city hopes to get from the state this legislative
session. Thankfully the Shubert's place in line for getting that $10 million
is just behind replacing the disco-ball in Senate chamber and in front of
Hula dancers for the Supreme Court Justices. But that's why we're here, to
stop the dazed and confused from flushing your money down the toilet."

Terrell Brown wrote.....

"Even the Shubert would eliminate a public eyesore although we might do just
as well to simply take a wrecking ball to the thing. We certainly aren't
going to see it in a bonding bill."

Vicky adds......

The innocent people in Minneapolis will be paying interest on that $4.7
million long after I'm dead; and the City wants to raise taxes to pay for
Police. It's so outrageous, it's hilarious.

This is a good lesson in paying attention to Council actions before it's too
late. Voting the culprits out of office doesn't fix the problem. Not only
do taxpayers have to pay dearly for the mistakes, but we also have to pay
big pensions and benefits to the guilty parties.

Which Council members (excluding the newbies) voted for this boondoggle
anyway? A great campaign issue for challengers!
