I guess I am missing what the point is here. Yes, rec sports have fees and yes they are subsidized so that the fees allow for everyone to have the ability to attend. We are not trying to have an elitist system where only those who can pay can play. If I couldn't have afforded the fee for the basketball program I signed my son up for I could have asked to have the fee waived. As to none of the other services charging fees, tot lots, bike paths, etc... a fee is a tax is a fee no matter how it is named and last I checked the Park Board was listed as a recipient of my tax dollars on my property tax statement. Recreational sports leagues, forestry, golf courses, tot lots, wading pools, gardens, fountains etc... are all wonderful benefits our system provides to not just the citizens of Minneapolis, but to the people who travel here from everywhere. My problem with the current system is are we really getting the most bang for our buck. The MPRB has spent a lot of money on "non-basics" during the past 8 years but had no plan in place for surprises like the resurgence of Dutch Elm, the loss of LGA etc... When did long range planning become a bad thing? The present majority and administration have decided to build more, create more and keep spending without planning for operating expenses over the long haul. Maybe it is time to re-evaluate and head in a different direction and a new board majority might be the best way to get that accomplished.
