Greetings list!

I went out skating yesterday as the tail end of the Viking loss was ringing in my ears. As longtime readers of the list know, I love skating on Minneapolis Parks rinks. The season for skating is short. Usually from the Winter Solstice to Presidents Day, about 50-60 days. On most rinks the ice is made by spraying water on a field. Rented trailers are trucked in and set up as warming houses.

So I wanted to wash away the ViQueens loss with skate and I headed over to Matthews Park where the ice was gleaming like a giant sheet of glass. Imagine my surprise when one of the forty people at the rink told me the warming house was locked.

"Why?" I asked.

"Too cold." was the reply.

Turns out that the warming houses have all been closed due to cold weather. They're still closed today. Kids have a three day weekend and the warming houses are closed all three days!

Does this strike anyone else as counter intuitive? In the cold I would think the warming house would be even more in demand, not just skaters but sliders and other in the outdoors on these really cold days.

I'm expect the reason for safety. Is it really safer to have a warm place for folks to change their skates than to have kids as young as three changing their skates on the steps of the warming room?

We need Park management that understands the way our parks are used. Please help! Call your Park Commissioner. Plan to vote for commissioners who will lead in a way that focuses on park users.
