From MPRB staff:
Just to fill you in on what is planned for Earth Day this year - 2005.
There will be two types of activities:
1. An Environmental "Fair" on Saturday April 23rd from 9am to Noon at the
Nokomis Community Center. I am working with Bob Kambeitz from SENA on
coordinating this. The event will be similar to previous year's Earth Day
in that there will be informational stations on a variety of topics. We
are still working this out, but so far this is what we have planned for topics:
Low input lawncare
Landscaping with native plants
Designing a rain garden
Composting
Building a rain barrel
energy conservation
Building a birdfeeder (activity for kids)
* There will be a trash pick up in the park land around lakes
Nokomis / Hiawatha and Minnehaha Parkway at this site.
* Jamie McBride one of our Naturalists is working with the Rec.
Centers to have kids do the artwork for the poster advertising the event
(like we did last year)
* My goal is to have an Earth Day celebration that gives information
on a variety of environmental topics/issues- not centering the event
totally around a trash pickup.
2. Earth Day Spring Trash pick up
Abby Schrader is coordinating this through the neighborhoods & MPRB
maintenance staff. Abby will be meeting with the neighborhoods and Susan
Young with Mpls. Solid Waste and recycling in the very near future to
hammer out details on this event.
LAST but not least.... In December 2004 Minneapolis Public Works pulled
the money that was given to the MPRB to do water education
programming. This money funded our Earth Day event along with the Billy
Bass Crystal Clear program/Catch Basin Stenciling and Public Service
announcement advertising with Transtop bus shelters.. We are still
negotiating with Public Works to get some type of funding for Earth Day
but as of now it is uncertain. This reduction in funding along with
significant staff changes in Environmental Operations (I am now doing
Shanna Hendrickson's job of natural resources management) has
necessitated a change in how Earth Day functions.
Thanks for your support,
Marcia Holmberg
