As a participant in those decision making and planning processes – ones I know for certain included thousands because I saw them, spoke to them and lived with them for 15 years – I hope you'll include on your tour my home in Seward because some of the money went into it. I also hope you'll include the home where my oldest children were born and is now the location of two wonderful daycare houses that allow for providers to have jobs and affordable housing. You'll also have to tour the New Riverside Cafe building home and training ground to literally hundreds of small business owners across the upper midwest and beyond. I make no apologies for the WB CDC or Tim Mungavan but the development and urban renewal that has gone on the West Bank for the past 30 years certainly included many thousands.
The history of the original TIF district on the West Bank is long and varied, the success or failure of the developments have yet to be determined. As Chou En Lai, former Chinese Foreign minister, remarked to American diplomat Richard Holbrook at a state dinner in Egypt once when asked, "What do you think were the consequences of the French Revolution?"
"It's too soon to tell."
On Feb 1, 2005, at 8:34 AM, Bob Johnson in a MPLS issues digest wrote about the West Bank CDC newsletter:
"Thousands of people" actually was about two hundred, but such exaggeration is
standard practice for Mungavan, but the documented is his repeated claim of
"about 50 million of mostly affordable housing development". Much of that came
from TIF. AND IF YOU WILL COME TO CEDAR-RIVERSIDE, I WILL TAKE YOU ON A
TOUR OF HIS PROJECTS SO THAT YOU, TOO, CAN WONDER WHERE ALL THOSE
MILLIONS WENT AND HOW THAT DEVELOPMENT FAILED.
