There were endorsements in several ward races where only one candidate requested to be screened; Wards 1 (Ostrow), 4 (Johnson), 5 (Samuels),
Don must have done a whole lot of repenting for running against the endorsed candidate last time.
In the mayor's race Rybak was not found "acceptable" by SDFL. Speeches were made in favor of this action citing his disregard of the party endorsement, past work against DFL endorsed candidates,
Note the double standard- if Don Samuels can be forgiven for the sin of defying the DFL endorsement, why can't RT? I dropped my support for RT after his taxpayer funded puff piece, but he doesn't deserve this insult. RT has been an unwavering supporter of the gay community, even attending a Stonewall DFL fundraiser after SDFL endorsed his opponent in 2001. To deny him an "acceptable" rating and put him in the same class as the Michelle Bachmans suggests that SDFL is still trying to avenge the defeat of Sharon Sayles-Belton.
and deliberately dividing communities (the police chief debate was used as one example).
If anyone is guilty of dividing communities it is the Stonewall DFL, which having thrown most every woman and all the trans people off the board in last years coup now represents only a minority of the gay community.
No speeches were made against. An acceptable rating by the caucus is perquisite to endorsement. McLaughlin was found acceptable and endorsed.
In retrospect though I have to thank the SDFL for throwing me off the board in that coup, as I am now free to choose the candidate I wish to support rather than blindly support theirs.
It somehow makes the campaign season more real with this first caucus endorsement. I applaud SDFL for coming out early (pun intended) in this race. I believe this gives the caucus stature.
Interestingly stonewalldfl.org gives rather confusing dates for the mayoral endorsement- in one place it's scheduled for today and another for next saturday. Perhaps SDFL came out with an early endorsement today because due to the scheduling confusion less of RT's supporters would not be present?
