The rich would love to have us have only regressive taxes like the sales tax. They would pay almost nothing. Money for public goods (eg schools, public health) would decline; ordinary people be less educated, less healthy, etc, in general weaker. Less able to defend themselves as the rich move to take further advantage of us, the sort of advantage the wealthy had over the poor in Dicken's England. Pawlenty understands this very well, and is working night and day to help the rich feed off the poor.
As for remedy - how about secession? Set up as an independent city-state, with income and corporate taxes. We'd do better than be robbed and disabled by the rich, as we are today. --David Shove Roseville ordinary people - who are their natural foes - would be hindered by poorly funded education atc, and thus less able to challenge the rich as they take the next step toward feudalism.
