Representatives of the Minneapolis Tree Commission warned the Park Board this
evening that
diseased trees have to come out much quicker in 2005 than they have in the
past. Instead of
focusing on diseased tree removal, resources were diverted to stump grinding
and tree planting
allowing the disease to spread quickly. On private land, 35% of diseased trees
marked for removal
last summer are still standing. There has been no program in place to ensure
that homeowners know
their options and take action.

Commissioner Kummer mentions tree planting initiatives. As Commissioner Erwin
mentioned at the
Board meeting tonite, it will be important to ensure that tree planting
initiatives do not divert
finite resources away from simply removing diseased trees.

I am very glad to see the Minneapolis Tree Commission effectively connecting
the Mayor, City
Council and MPRB.
