EY: Paul - thanks for clarifying the actual motion here. Worth noting: in Ward 5, Samuels is running as a DFLer - and is running against a Green Party candidate, Natalie Johnson Lee. The anti-gay African American Minister, Bob Battle wrote a column praising Michele Bachmann in the column suggested that Natalie Johnson Lee was in favor of the Bachmann amendment. TN: DarrelI Gerber and I spoke to Natalie Johnson-Lee personally about the Bob Battle article (as well as other subjects.) She spicifically told me that she does not support and never claimed to support the Bachmann amendment, nor has she told Reverend Battle that she supports the Bachmann amendment. She did say however that GLBT issues aren't really on the radar for a lot of her constituents, and that she's been more focused on dealing with the poverty and often dismal conditions in her ward. She expressed frustration that the only time she hears some of the activists (including some Green Party members) is on GLBT issues, and not on addrssing the needs of the 5th ward or the Black community in general. As for the issue of the police chief debate, I think it's remarkable that a Minneapolis Police Chief is actually disciplining out of control police, whether it's for using confiscated scalped basketball tickets, or firing a cop who is accused of raping a woman in St. Paul. A sharp change from a year ago. http://www.twincities.com/mld/twincities/news/columnists/ruben_rosario/ 10928855.htm I wonder if, even after the incidents mentioned above, Commissioner McLaughlin (who is making "the rising crime rate" his issue, those CM's who voted against McManus (Lisa Goodman and Vice President Lilligren) still think that an MPD insider would have done squat for police accountability. I wonder if any of them will place an equal emphasis in police accountability...however, I'm notholding my breath. After living through John Laux, I don't believe that ANY MPD insider, (GLBT or not) would be able to both reign in out of control police AND still have the resepct of the police federation. In hindsight, I can't see how a progressive orginization which supports human rights could use support for or the appointment of William McManus as a reason to deny an acceptable rating to a candidate.
