In fact, during the meeting there was an evolution of thinking on this issue in that we are more willing to look past that issue when it comes to acceptable ratings. Due, in part, to our responsibility to the broader GLBT community. We issued acceptable ratings for several candidates who are planning to run whether or not they get DFL endorsement.

The deciding factor with Ms. McDonald, as it was with Mr. Samuals, was
her active support of a candidate from an entirely seperate political
party in the recent past. In 2002 she served as the finance director for
the Penny for Governor campaign when he was running under the banner of
the Independence Party.
Thank you for clarifying Megan....

So in other words, Lisa is fine on GLBT issues. It's that she supported Tim Penny for Governor that is the problem.

In the case of Don Samuels - again the issue is not based on how Samuels is on GLBT issues. Rather the issue is that he supported a Green party legislative candidate (who lost).

I don't get it with Samuels. In this case, I believe Don Samuels is the only declared DFLer running against the Green Party's Natalie Johnson Lee. Don - have you ever thought of running as a Republican?

Regarding my comments regarding the Mayor, it does appear that I was
mistaken and a apologize to the Mayor for that. This does not change my
vote on that issue, as I had other reasons, but I do apologize for the
mistake.) I would also note that I was not attributing any comments to
Gary Schiff but just thought he might have more information.

I also would encourage Megan to send this message to the Stonewall DFL board list - and to the others attending the meeting. It's important to let the people know who she told this story to, that it was inaccurate.

Thanks for clarifying. Others in Stonewall - as well as Robert Lilligren told me that Gary Schiff had NOT made this claim about Mayor Rybak at the membership endorsement vote. Schiff did talk about how Rybak had encouraged Annie Young to run against him. Without talking to Annie, I have no idea whether this is true or not. Perhaps since Annie Young is on this list, she can clarify whether she got encouragement to run for 9th ward from Mayor Rybak. Gary Schiff should relax about this. A challenging election makes a person a better candidate - and a better council member.

As for those who think I am simply being an "endorsement fascist" I will
note that if that were the case I would not ahve switched to supporting
Chris Coleman for St. Paul Mayor (remember folks, I actually live in St.
Paul) on Saturday. Even though he has run against and supported other
Democrats against the DFL endorsement in the past he very much impressed
me and made it easy for me to support him.

I am aware of this. Others on this list are probably not aware of that.

Finally, if you guys keep picking on me I feel it is only fair to let
you know that my big sister is now a member of this list and you don't
want to know waht she did to people who picked on me in grade school!
;-)

It's not "picking on" someone to report on actions taken at a political endorsement screening. A little sunshine on the endorsement process always is helpful.

It might be worth going to some union endorsement screenings and reporting on them for the same reason. I'm sure there are similar bizzarre non-issue related reasons Unions endorse candidates also.
