In short the analogy would most likely be correct. There may be
multiple points on the wireless network that connect to the Internet.

A wireless Minneapolis would work similar to a home network. At this
point it would probably be best to wait on a wireless network until the
new technologies are implemented, specifically the 802.11n or 802.16
(WiMax) technologies. These types of networks have a longer radio range
and have faster transfer speeds than the 802.11a, 802.11b, and 802.11g
technologies. The newer technologies will require people to upgrade
their wireless hardware to connect to the networks.

How the network would be managed I guess would depend on the lawyers.
Currently, library users can use library provided computers but users
need to logon to the computers with their library accounts and the
traffic is logged. I would assume that the city would do the same. You
would need to sign up for an account so you can logon to the network and
be monitored on the network. The network probably would not use any of
the current authentication systems like WEP or WPA but would probably be
open. Securing wireless networks on a scale like a city would be a
little bit of work.

The Twin Cities Wireless Users Group, http://www.tcwug.org
<http://www.tcwug.org/> , has had an 802.11b access point broadcasting
in Loring Park for the last year. On a warm day you can head to flower
garden and get on the Internet, for free.

Subject: Re: [Mpls] Wireless Minneapolis - one more thing, security

Will wireless minneapolis be similar to my home wireless network? if you
can log into my router if i have it password protected, you could see
any shared folders i have on my machines. will that happen if i hook up
to the wireless mpls? I see minneapolis being like a large office that
has a T3 connection to the internet and then residents (office
employees) inside mpls (the office) connects thru the mpls (office)
network. do i have the analogy wrong?
