Making $20 an hour to drive a bus (a bus!!), and they wanted more from the
public teat? No wonder we're going broke.

I drove those buses for several years. My top wage was $14.02/hr., time and a half for overtime, double time on holidays. I earned every penny of it. I stopped driving for MTC in 85. Fifteen years later, the pay has only risen $6.00/hr. In buying power, drivers have not improved their wages in 15 years.
I liked driving bus, but after so many years one begins to think of how quiet a load of broccoli is; it never spits on you, knifes you, shoots you, rapes you, has sex with someone in the rear seats, throws you off your own bus, steps out in front of you waving as you slide downhill on the ice, exposes himself to children, starts a fight in the rear seats, slices the seats, kicks in the doors, grabs some woman in the crowd, cusses a blue streak the whole time he rides, gets indignant and reams you out because the driver before you didn't pick him up, has an argument with his invisible friend at full volume, calls you every rude, scatological thing he can think of because you parked five feet in front of the bus stop sign. Or how about a full bus, half African American and half Turret's syndrome. Or a full load of people coming back from wrestling and reenacting the matches.
It might seem overpaid until you try it. Can you drive a 40 foot vehicle, (no power steering) through a barrel slolom--in reverse? I can.
