Comments in response to the Fred Olson - Peace Foundation post; Contrary to the Peace Foundation post, the whole city is not disturbed by the gangland style slaying of two men yesterday at a local Northside restaurant. If they react at all, the majority of Minneapolis residents will say that these deaths are another example of incidents more common in north side neighborhoods.
All Minneapolis residents own all incidents of violence; location within the City is irrelevant. Residents of Northside neighborhoods are not bracing themselves "against the mind numbing repetition of violence"; they are angry and frustrated and they resent the implication that they are living in the "killing fields" of Minneapolis. They believe that they have as much right to live safely in their neighborhoods as any other Minneapolis resident, in any neighborhood and they believe that people who commit any crime should be arrested, prosecuted and sentenced appropriately. Families of victims should be supported in their grief to acknowledge a premature loss of life; and especially for the families of intended victims when violent and untimely death is often the final act in a life time of violence and an indictment of good intentions. There is no reason for the north side community to come together to "grieve the horror"; it is time for all Minneapolis residents to unite against the gangs that deliver violence along with drugs, prostitution, burglary, robbery and assault. It is time to hold the School Board responsible for their educational neglect of truant and suspended students. And, it is long past time to demand the delivery of additional resources so the Minneapolis Police Department can deliver proactive interventions. Violence, gangs, drugs and death are not Northside issues - they are Minneapolis issues. To think or act otherwise is to acknowledge that a quarter of this city is disposable and that is unacceptable! Roberta Englund Folwell Neighborhood 4th Ward CARE Task Force REMINDERS: 1. Be civil!
