Nick is a columnist and a good Catholic boy, so it's no surprise he came out

I have no personal stake in this matter either way. My tendancy is to side with the residents, but not that strongly.

Regardless, this sort of characterization is extremely offensive
to me as a practicing Catholic. To suggest that all "good Catholics"
necessarily advocate for one specific side of any issues is...simply
wrong.

Anyone who can't imagine Catholics supporting public education,
ecumenical work, gay and lesbian rights or any other progressive
position should investigate the many Catholic and interfaith
groups that advocate for social justice. http://www.osjspm.org/cst/
has a good summary of Catholic teaching on social issues.
