I was at the Ward 3 City Council candidate debate last night as a friend of Jeremy Wieland. Both candidates, Jeremy Wieland ( http://www.jeremywieland.blogs.com/ ) and Diane Hofstede ( http://www.dianehofstede.com/ ), when specifically asked if they would vote to abandon Grove Street if elected, said they wouldn't vote for that. Jeremy said a clear 'No!', and talked about the options for DeLaSalle such as using existing fields nearby for schools scheduled to be closed, and Diane said she wasn't in favor of that and talked about the need for community and other things. I thought that was an interesting point in the debate. The implications of that are fairly clear, no abandonment, no field.

Jeremy also expressed respect for DeLaSalle and what they do as well (I think Diane does too). I think that is important. When I step back and look at this, it is a tragedy. I think that shows that the process we have is badly broken. We need to fix it. The way this process has been manhandled hasn't helped anyone, it is a hornets nest of issues now. The neighborhood is up in arms and is rightly fearful based on past experience. And DeLaSalle wants their school to stay healthy and vibrant but doesn't have a clear path forward. This shows the lack of leadership and vision in our planning and development process that we couldn't bring the two together, it simply isn't trusted by neighborhoods, it isn't effective for organizations. Why can't we get this right?
