I want to thank the Minneapolis City Council for the action they took at their April 1st meeting.
As I am more than willing to criticize the Council Members, I am also happy to compliment them. The Council voted to support repeal of the antiquated and (in most of its sections)unconstitutional State Vagrancy Statute. I watched that meeting via the web and was impressed at the manner in which council members discussed the issue. Terms such as not wanting to criminalize homelessness, not wanting to unfairly target those who are homeless with this law were used. I belive this is a hopeful sign, that there is starting to be a shift in attitude towards those of our residents experiencing homelessness by our leaders. I hope that there will be continued meaningful dialogue and actions taken by our City leaders to work together with advocates to solve homelessness, not punish those who have no home.
