Here's how I'm choosing, as a delegate, to support one of the six. I made my final decision after posting a line-up sometime very late last night.
Hayden has the best understanding of the ins and outs of development. It's a number one issue for several areas of the 8th ward in the coming 4 years. He's strongly cross-cultural, affable, and bright. His supporters are some of the truly steady old heads in the ward. He has strong family support for such a move. While he works a white collar position, his people include blue collar folks, so he can relate to both groups most likely to comprise his constituents--second generation middle class and strivers. He works cross culturally very well.
As a delegate from 8-2, I feel secure toward my precinct in choosing Hayden and that he reflects the DFLers in the precinct best among those who stepped forward.
Elizabeth Glidden is a very attractive candidate as well. She's very bright, personable, she has worked inter-culturally, she's a doubter and knows how to research questions. She is not as well acquainted with the ward, though, and just got swept into it with the redistricting. As a lawyer she has a different grasp of the issues facing the 8th, though not an opposite grasp. She does not upset the comfort level of the dominant paradigm in council chambers. That, in my estimation, has been a bedrock initiative the 8th ward DFL has followed for 25 years and very close to the heart of most of the DFLers here--one of our good points and something the 8th needs to stay committed to doing. That and knowledge of the ward slotted her second to Hayden, IMO.
Marie Hauser has her good points, but I haven't felt positive enough about her way of looking at issues for the Park Board to want to move her into city hall. She's strong on labor issues In a heavily blue/pink collar ward that's a plus. She has some money to work with and has papered the north end of the ward, at least, with advertisements.
Dennis Tifft has not made one statement, so far, either in semi-private conversation or in debate that tells me he has a grasp of how to work through the issues or precisely who he would be working through these issues for. He has virtually no cross-cultural experience to rely on that I can ascertain. He does have cash to spend, but his support appears to be mono-cultural.
Neither Titi Bediako nor Darrel Robinson is ready to produce were one or the other to be elected.
