I wish that Titi [if she really said that] and anyone else who feels that this was a race issue would talk about why they feel that way.
WM: To a certain extent race was an issue for some delegates. Having
lived in the 8th ward yourself, I'm surprised you didn't notice race is
an issue for some folks. Several delegates I personally know were
looking for someone white and middle class period. Folks with that mind
set are scattered throughout the ward. However, in the 8th ward race is
so intertwined with class that it's very hard to separate the two.
Indeed, both stem from the same core weirdness of humans.
I'm sure Jeff wouldn't want people to vote for him simply because he
is black, and I know Elizabeth would not want people to vote for her simply
because she's white.
WM: That's naive. For the candidate, a vote is a vote is a vote. When I
lived in Illinois many were voted into office with the help of the dead.
The winners do not complain.
And I also think that all of us who believe in
representative democracy are concerned about having people of color in
positions of power.
WM: Indeed. This statement can be taken two ways and, in all
probability, was expressed both ways through votes at the convention.
