WM: The library is understaffed and cannot get all the assigned work
done as it is. It's not so simple a task and costs money. The library
often buys 14 or more copies of popular books; after a year, they throw
away some of those copies. After two or three years, they throw away
more of those copies. They toss outdated atlases and items that are
replenished annually. Someone suggested sending them to Africa where
there's a shortage of books. Who would pay for that? It costs the earth
to ship books.
Rod Krueger, from the Library Board, says that he's asking the library director to talk to the city attorney about this, because he says that the library is legally allowed to THROW OUT ITEMS OF LITTLE VALUE, but they are not allowed to GIVE AWAY ITEMS OF LITTLE VALUE. Now, this is ridiculous.
WM: For different reasons, SuperAmerica throws out food daily. They
cannot give it away. I would guess that booksellers would not be too
happy if the library gave away books.
By the way, since we're talking about libraries, who else thinks that the huge awning sticking out over Nicollet and Hennepin at the top of the new Central Library is ugly.
WM: It will look quite a bit different when the planetarium is put up.
