Community initiative succeeds in replicating historic Grain Belt fountain

A celebration of the Legacy Fountain & Gardens community initiative will be
held on Saturday, May 21, to dedicate the fountain at the corner of Marshall
and Broadway Streets NE in the Historic Grain Belt Campus.

Event: Fountain dedication, remarks, and debut of the water spout

When: Saturday, May 21, 11:00 a.m.

Where: In front of Pierre Bottineau Community Library, 55 Broadway St. NE

What: The fountain is the work of a committee, headed by neighborhood resident
Michael Rainville, that has so far raised more than $100,000 through monetary
donations and the sale of commemorative pavers and garden benches. A $20,000
gift and an additional $20,000 challenge grant from the Graco Foundation helped
the complete a large portion of the project's first phase. Additional donations
are being accepted to dedicate additional pavers and benches, add more garden
space, and cover maintenance and upkeep of the fountain and gardens. The
landscape design was provided by RSP Architects based on the historic Grain
Belt fountain that stood at the corner for many years.

Architects worked with the City of Minneapolis Heritage Preservation Commission
and the Minnesota Historical Society to ensure historical integrity of the
fountain, which will serve as a focal point in the community and a gathering
place for residents and visitors alike.

The Pierre Bottineau Legacy Fountain and Gardens Committee will continue to
raise funds to build and maintain the fountain and gardens, assuring that the
beauty of this special place endures for future generations.
