Jane Kirtley, the University of Minnesota's Silha Professor of Media Ethics and Law, will be a featured speaker at the Conference on Libraries & the Patriot Act next Monday morning, May 16th, at the Continuing Education Conference Center on the UM's St. Paul Campus.
Prior to her appointment with the U's School of Journalism, Prof. Kirtley was the Executive Director of the Reporters' Committee for Freedom of the Press, a voluntary unincorporated association of reporters and editors founded in 1970 which is devoted to protecting the First Amendment and freedom of information interests of the news media.
Professor Kirtley, who has waived her speaking fee for this conference, has appeared on nationally-broadcast programs such as Nightline, All Things Considered, The Jim Lehrer News Hour, Good Morning America, Today, Donahue, and Crossfire. She writes and speaks frequently on media law and freedom of information issues in the United States and abroad, and writes "The Press and the Law" column each month for The American Journalism Review.
