A response to Booker from a list member who is out of posts for the day:

Please forward this to "the list". I am out of posts for the day.

I partially agree with Booker. The Patriot Act is bad legislation and leaves
the very real and distinct possibility that individuals, or groups, will be
unfairly persecuted in our country.

Our views differ however, in that I DO NOT believe that 2 wrongs make a right.
If the "Patriot Act" is bad legislation (and I personally believe it is), then
we need to change it. To be afraid to call a specific element (gangs) of our
society what it is - terrorists, BECAUSE of this particular piece of
legislation is, in my opinion, gutless...

It is exactly this mentality of choosing the "lesser of two evils" that has
placed us exactly where we currently find ourselves. So, let's go ahead and
prject the outcome. Let's continue to send "mixed messages" to the very people
that need our help and guidance the most. Let's go ahead and tell them that we
DO NOT have the guts to tell them what they are doing is WRONG and it is
hurting MANY individuals (including themselves), because the possibility exists
that our current President might use this as an excuse to infringe upon the
liberties of those that look the other way at what they do.

Or maybe, if one thinks logically about it, you'd come to the same
conclusion I have come to. Both the Patriot Act legislation and gangs are bad
for our society and to tolerate either, in order to oppose the other is not in
our best interests.

This situation is no different than what many parents, friends and relatives
currently encounter on a daily basis with those they love that are in touble.
It's called intervention. It's about caring enough about someone you truly love
to risk the thought of losing your relationship with them BECAUSE you know that
the other options available are even less-palatable.

It takes a very courageous individual to do this. I applaud both Rev. Terrill
and Councilmember Samuels for caring enough to do so.
