And I truly don't care what "Webster" has to say about what racism is.
Racism is in the eye of the beholder - in this case, Ms. Hakeem, the Green
Party endorsed candidate for Mayor of Minneapolis.

Doug Mann responds

At least one un-named target of Eric's unusually civil, respectful polemic is
moi, Doug Mann. I was the only person to make a reference to "webster" in the
first of my two posts to the minneapolis issues list on the Hakeem threads.

In both posts I argued that political, not racial bias, was the prime motive
for the MWP not running an article about Farheen Hakeem's campaign. In my
second post I restated that point and made it clear that I was not dismissing
Hakeem's complaint of being victimized by racial bias and stereotyping.

It should also be noted that Farheen's letter to the editor was about a
situation that had already been resolved. The story that appeared in the MWP
was
not written by the reporter whose conduct inspired Farheen to write the letter
to the editor. The main problem seemed to be that the MWP was doing a human
interest piece, not a story about Farheen Hakeem's campaign.

In both posts I stated my view that it is in the interests a majority of
residents of Minneapolis, including many whites, to oppose racist
discrimination.
I believe that Eric Oines would not disagree that the city should aggressively
enforce fair employment and housing laws, and oppose institutionalized racial
discrimination in the Minneapolis Public Schools. Eric has supported my
campaigns for school board despite our differences over how to define, and
fight,
racism.

I disagree with Eric that whites can't ever be on the receiving end of
racism. Members of all "races" have prejudices and power. The problem is a
system in
which racial discrimination reinforces and is reinforced by a belief system
based on the idea that one race is, by nature superior to another (racism by
Webster's definition). And racial discrimination also nourishes a political and
social system based on economic exploitation.
