"RT lost the convention for the same three reasons he'll lose the election. Education, Public Safety and NRP."
I wouldn't be so sure. From where I sat in the convention, it was a sea of Rybak buttons. As we all know, the city often looks different depending upon where you live. RT's strongest wards -- 13, 11, 7 & 12 (to a lesser extent) -- have the highest voting turnout rates in the city. There may not have been enough delegates from these wards to put RT over the top at the convention, but the reality is a lot more of our neighbors go to the polls. And there is no reason to think they will be more favorably disposed to supporting McLaughlin than the delegates. For these voters, education and public safety probably are important. NRP probably isn't. Whatever you think of the schools, you can't lay that responsibility on the Mayor given the structure of our school system. As for public safety, that's an open question and one I'm sure we will hear debated ad infinitum between now and the primary (and general election). I think McLaughlin's base was in the room on Saturday and that's why he almost won the endorsement. I don't think that will be true on primary day. Steve Marchese Hale, Ward 11 REMINDERS: 1.
