Art Naftalin was involved in the first convention of the Minnesota Young DFL in 1947. He was an integral part of Humphrey's organizing effort to establish control of the newly formed organization of a newly formed party. This effort laid the ground work for Humphrey's faction to solidify a power base in the party.
Their success so stirred the party that the DFL state leaders tried to annul the results of the convention. Naftalin was depicted in newspapers as declaring that the results of the YDFL convention were representative of what was to come in the struggle for control of the DFL. He was right.
