Uncle Tom (Uncle Tom's Cabin) is a fictional character who loved his enemies,
turned the other cheek, etc. Booker referred to people as "Uncle Tom's" for
conduct that was out of character for Tom, who was a model slave, but not a
sellout, collaborator, or coward. Tom refused to do his master's dirty work,
even
to spare himself from severe punishment and death. Tom received a severe
lashing by a couple of slave henchmen for his refusal to obey an order to whip
another slave, and was ultimately killed by his master, Simon LaGree, for
refusing to give up information concerning the whereabouts (and escape plan) of
a
couple of slaves.
