I have known landlords (in north Minneapolis) that traded sexual-favors in-lieu of rent. I have known landlords that traded rent for drugs. Bill Cullen Responds: Have you told the police? This is horrible behavior and we must not tolerate it. There was a landlord in St. Paul accused of accepting sex in lieu of rent, and it was front page news for months. Dennis Plante Continues: I have known landlords that KNOWINGLY rented to renters that did not pass muster with even a slightly reasonable screening process. Yet, some would like to place this responsibility entirely onto "society". Where is THEIR social responsibility? Bill Cullen Responds: Can you please define “Pass Muster?” It seems to me that we (Minneapolis) must make a decision. When it comes to housing families that don’t “pass muster” in our community, I see three choices: a) House them in “supportive” housing. This would include Jail. b) House them in regular housing. Usually rental housing is their only option. c) Conclude that some people don't deserve housing. If a family doesn’t “past muster”, what do you propose? It is intellectually dishonest to select “supportive housing” and then not fund the system. Many on this board actively advocate for light criminal sentences, selfish investment in our own homes (NRP) and new Government subsidized market rate housing. It is no wonder supportive housing lacks necessary funds. Then those same people advocate for pummeling landlords when they rent to families that don’t “pass muster.” Does that mean you are advocating for higher homelessness? If so, lets have an open discussion on “passing muster.” Because I want to meet my “social responsibility.” I want to know who doesn’t deserve housing. Some people are so programmed to blame the landlord that they have lost focus of the real problem: individuals are terrorizing neighborhoods and we are not holding them accountable.
