Michael Thompson writes:

So, let me just get this straight: the Green party is advocating an
ordinance, a LAW, that mandates what a "living wage" is, and will force
employers to pay this to employees? How exactly is that going to help
workers?

responded in part

"Down to The Living Wage ordinance: Yes, Michael, the ordinance will be a
strong, enforceable law that states all companies that receive city money
through subsidies or contracts must pay a living wage. This does not mean
that private companies cannot still pay their employees poverty-level wages
in Minneapolis.

“Living wage” is defined as 130% of the Federal Poverty limit for a
family of four, which is the level at which that family qualifies for food
stamps.

"You see, many companies that receive subsidies funded through your tax
dollars do not pay a living wage, and therefore our limited public dollars
are subsidizing poverty-wage work."

Perfectly true, Aaron. I would just like to emphasize that not having such a law results in a double subsidy for those companies since the fact that we are subsidizing their employees with welfare to make up the difference the employer refuses to pay amounts to another subsidy for that employer.
