It was an interesting performance at the Stone Arch Bridge,
yesterday evening...which will be repeated this evening at 8:15.

Hardenbergh is an artist in residence with the Center for
Global Environmental Education at Hamline University,
and there's always a table with literature about the source
of pollution in our river...

Part of the performance features a "cleansing
ritual" by women who pour clean pure water into the river...

As the water went into the river, I noticed a large fish,
with bright silver skin dead and floating... and where the falls
were churning, there was a large white plastic barrel tossed
repeatedly against the rocks, and a little further away,
islands of something...detergent?...and plenty more
whatever that was on the surface of the river...

Seemed tragic and criminal to see the river like that.
I see the river every day and the volume of stuff I've
seen on it lately is the worst its been in a long time.

The recent City of Minneapolis Drinking water quality report
enclosed with the Southwest Journal, mentions many possible
sources... like lawn fertilizer and pesticides...BUT it's difficult
to believe that THIS level of pollution is coming from residential
sources.

I suspect commercial/industrial concerns are doing some
wholesale spewing into the river and if there are regulations,
limiting their discharge of stuff into the river, they appear
to not be enforced. Of course our high rainfall could be
whipping it up more than usual...

And so considering the current condition of the Mississippi,
it's even more troubling to think about the words in the
water quality report:

" The sources of drinking water (both tap water and bottled water)
include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs
and wells."

Our drinking water comes from the Mississippi.
