Why not sell the land around the Metrodome in order to pay for the new stadium.
There has to be about 20 acres right next to downtown, with its own LRT stop
and top notch bus service, with prime highway access and great views of DT and
walking distance to the Guthrie, the orchestra, DT Restaurants and shops and
the river. That is an extremely desireable site. At $8-15 million an acre
that is a lot of cash. We could get $200 million or more in cash right there.
A single 20 acre site in a major metropolitan center is unheard of. With $120
million from Pohlad that leaves the public with only $150 million of the $475
million tab, and we still own the new stadium. Pohlad or the State could throw
in another $100 million and we would have a roof. The Vikes are moving to the
suburbs so we can raze the dome and put in a new development with 20 additional
acres of tax base. That would also free up the masive surface parking lot
wasteland near the river for development and parks.
